Effective Tips For Dry Skin Therapy
There are some companies that come to mind when people are talking about dry skin therapy. They come to mind, because they have been advertised on television since we were kids. Vaseline, for example, is one of the remedies that come to mind. I'm wondering how many people actually know what Vaseline is.
It was discovered on some of the first oil rigs in the US. The workers said that it helped heal burns, but was, otherwise, nuisance. It was originally promoted as a kind of "cure-all". But, now we know that it has no medicinal activity, is not effective for burns and should never have been promoted as dry skin therapy.
As the years went by, the companies that used the petroleum derivative learned to make it white and called it petrolatum. If you have a bottle of lotion in your home, you will probably see petrolatum listed as one of the ingredients.
Mineral oil is a similar petroleum derivative. Mineral oils were commonly touted as dry skin remedies for many years. Baby oil is mineral oil with some added fragrances.
Vaseline, petrolatum and mineral oil are not actually dry skin remedies. They are not absorbed by the skin's cells. They do not provide moisture. They are not similar enough to the skin's own oils, which we call sebum.
Effective dry skin therapy comes from plant-based oils that are similar, on a molecular level, to the skin's sebum. Grape seed, jojoba, olive, avocado and macadamia oils are some of the compounds to look for. Shea butter is another. But, one of the most effective, according to clinical trials is an antioxidant.
Antioxidants are naturally present in the skin's cells, but exposure to the sun, environmental toxins and air pollution quickly depletes the skin's antioxidant content. In addition, the skin's antioxidant content simply decreases with age, while the number of free radical molecules, a cause of cellular aging, continues to rise.
All antioxidants are beneficial to the skin's health, but research indicates that coenzyme Q10 is one of the most beneficial. Dry skin remedies containing it have been shown to reverse sun damage and wrinkling, while improving the skin's moisture content by more than 30%.
With continued use, dry skin therapy containing coenzyme Q10 and other natural ingredients can make a huge difference in your skin's health and appearance. Other steps that you should take include the use of mild cleansers, reducing your water's temperature, drinking more water and consistently using an effective moisturizer after every bath.
Natural dry skin remedies work. Petroleum-based ones feel good initially, but they actually make you dependent on them, by causing excessive dryness, with continued use. If they were only used occasionally, it would be okay. But, for daily use, you need something different.
Be sure to read the label of ingredients before you buy any cosmetics. Just because the label says "dry skin therapy" doesn't mean that it is actually effective. Try natural oils. You'll learn to love your skin, again.
